# Offline expense tracker for iPhone: what “works offline” should mean.

Most budget apps that call themselves offline let you type an entry and sync it later. Very few can read a receipt with no connection. Almost none can answer a question about your spending in airplane mode. Here is how to tell the difference.

## What “offline” means in a budget app

“Works offline” is one of the vaguest promises in an app store listing. It can mean the app opens on a plane. It can mean your entries wait in a queue until the next sync. It rarely tells you which features still work when there is no signal.

That matters more than it sounds. You pay for lunch in a basement food court. You land in a new country before buying a SIM. You switch off data to save money at the end of the month. Those are exactly the moments you want to record a payment, and exactly the moments a server-dependent app goes quiet.

So when you search for an offline expense tracker, ask a sharper question. What can the app actually do with no connection, and what does it quietly save for later?

## The three levels of offline: typing, scanning, asking

We find it useful to split offline into three levels. Each one is harder to build than the last.

- **Typing offline.** You enter an amount and a category by hand, and the app stores it on the phone. Most expense trackers reach this level. It is useful, but it is still manual work.
- **Scanning offline.** You take a photo of a receipt or share a payment screenshot, and the app reads the merchant, total and date with no connection. This needs a recognition model on the phone itself.
- **Asking offline.** You ask “how much did I spend on food this week?” and get an answer from your own records, in airplane mode. This needs a language model on the phone, which is the rarest piece of all.

An expense tracker app without internet at level one saves you a sync error. At level three, it does the whole job wherever you are.

## Why most receipt scanners need a connection

Reading a receipt is hard. The app must find the text, work out which number is the total, and match a merchant name that is printed in a dozen layouts. The simplest way to build that is to upload the photo to a server and run a large model there. That is why most receipt scanners stop working the moment you lose signal.

It also means the photo leaves your phone. For a receipt, that can include where you were, what you bought and sometimes who you paid. An offline receipt scanner avoids both problems at once, because there is nothing to upload.

Spenti takes that route. It runs small, specialized models on the phone by default. If you want the detail, [how Spenti processes receipts](https://spenti.app/blog/how-spenti-processes-receipts/) walks through the pipeline step by step.

## How Spenti works in airplane mode

Spenti is live on iPhone (iOS 16 or later); Android is next. After a one-time model download, it reaches all three levels with no connection.

Typing works from the first launch. Manual entry is unlimited on every plan. Scanning works once the receipt reader is on the phone. You can photograph a paper receipt, share a slip or payment screenshot from another app, or import a batch from your photo library. Spenti reads the merchant, items, total, date, currency and category, then asks you to review them. We make no accuracy claim, so check the fields before you save.

Asking works once the optional chat model is on the phone. The on-device chat reads English and Thai, and answers from the records stored in the app. Budgets, alerts, charts, recaps, search and widgets all run from the same local data, so they keep working too.

## What still needs the internet, honestly

A budget app that works offline on iPhone still needs a connection for a few things. Here is the complete list, matching the [privacy policy](https://spenti.app/privacy/):

- The first scan, which downloads the receipt reader of about 230 MB.
- The optional spending chat model, a download of about 850 MB.
- [Your own AI](https://spenti.app/your-own-ai/) on Pro, which sends receipt text and chat questions to the provider you connected. It is off by default.
- Live exchange rates for the currencies you use, which are also off by default.
- App Store purchases, such as buying Basic or Pro.
- Checking for app and model updates, and downloading them.
- Optional backup to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive.

Everything else runs on the phone. There is no Spenti account to sign in to, and no Spenti server holding your records.

## Backups when nothing syncs to a server

The usual worry about an offline app is simple. If nothing syncs, what happens when you lose the phone? Spenti answers with a backup you control, not one we hold.

On Basic and Pro, you can back up to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive account. You can add a passphrase, so the backup is encrypted before it leaves the phone. A restore merges with what is already there and never deletes. You can also export to CSV or Excel whenever you like.

On the phone itself, app lock keeps the ledger behind Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. If you want the thinking behind this design, read [privacy is control, not secrecy](https://spenti.app/blog/privacy-is-control/).

## Frequently asked questions

Answered from the checked sources

### Does Spenti work on an iPhone with no SIM or no data plan?

Yes. You need Wi-Fi once, for the receipt reader download of about 230 MB on your first scan, and again if you want the optional chat model of about 850 MB. After that, scanning, chat, budgets and search work with no connection at all.

### Does Spenti Pro need the internet?

Buying or restoring Pro goes through the App Store, so that step needs a connection. Pro (from US$4.99/month, or the local price the App Store shows) adds unlimited scans and chat, which run on the phone by default. Your own AI is the one Pro feature that always needs the internet, because it sends receipt text to the provider you connected.

### Can I chat about my spending offline in Thai or other languages?

The on-device chat reads English and Thai, offline. In the app’s other ten languages it offers suggested questions in your language and answers them, offline too. Asking anything else in another language needs Your own AI on Pro, which is opt-in, text only, and goes straight from your phone to your provider, never through Spenti. That path needs a connection.

### Can I get my data out if nothing syncs to a server?

Yes. Basic and Pro export to CSV or Excel, and back up to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive with optional passphrase encryption. A restore merges and never deletes.

### How many receipts can I scan offline on the Free plan?

The Free plan includes 30 AI scans and 15 chat messages a month, plus unlimited manual entry. It never expires, and there is no trial.
